The Medal of Honor was the second of US medals. The First was the the Purple Heart, designed by George Washington.

The Medal of Honor was the only medal the USA had in the Civil War so they gave it out for darn near anything. The most common reason it was awarded was when a Union soldier either prevented our flag from being captured by the enemy or he captured the enemy flag during a battle. Pretty lame.

There were a LOT of them handed out during the Civil War. 307 were given to Navy personnel during the Civil War, obviously not for capturing a flag.
