Should George Welch be given a Medal of Honor for his actions at Pearl Harbor?

After Pearl Harbor, Welch was nominated for a Medal of Honor. However, he was only awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Should the military rectify its mistake and award him and Ken Taylor the Medals of Honor they earned that day? Why or why not.

This question is being asked to draw attention to what these two men did. Best answer will be awarded Dec. 7.Should George Welch be given a Medal of Honor for his actions at Pearl Harbor?
Mr. George Welch and Ken Taylor..... 2 of the 17 USAAF pilots that engaged the enemy of the United States which was Japan that day on December 7, 1941. Let me ask you a question....... would you yourself put your life on the line outnumbered atleast 5 to 1 and a high possibility of you not even going to survive??? That's what medal of honor recipients are, crazy young men who are willing to look death right in the eye and say "not today lad, not today." What their actions along with the other 15 other pilots that did what they did that day will never be forgotten. The reason why that they never were recieved the medal of honor was that they werent order too go up and fight head on, but what would of happened if they didnt? That's the question that many critics forget even to this day. How many more lives would been lost if they didnt take it up to the sky? No matter what even though they were never awarded the medal of honor, they chose to go up their not just for themselves but what all servicemen live for, breathe for, and die for and that's for the love of their country. They should be remember as not how they werent awarded the medal of honor, but that they lived by the medal of honor. And to remember them even more they should be awarded the medal of honor, not just on what they did that day, but how they lived their lives before and after the day that made them medal of honors in the flesh. God Bless them and may the American people know those 16 honorable names that went up and fight the enemy.Should George Welch be given a Medal of Honor for his actions at Pearl Harbor?

I know this sounds cynical but , 'What the Heck, Why Not.' Yes Ken Taylor and George Welch acted heroically, as did many others, some praised and honored, others ignored, in truth the entire system of handing out medals %26amp; awards has been so tainted with controversy and often self interest on the part of various groups that it is unfortunately a mute point. A person cutting his thumb opening a can of corned beef on a battlefield gets a Purple Heart, a man such as George Welch gets a DSC when his actions warranted a MOH - - - not mentioned in many histories is that Welch was originally named Schwartz, which may have influence some in the War Department, and that he was a bit of a square peg in a round hole, in other words he never rose as high as he ought to have in rank %26amp; status. Anyhow, yes, holler for Welch, he was truly a hero on December 7 1941.

Peace
