What does it take in order to be awarded a Purple Heart? And how about the Medal of Honor?

What's the requirement to get a Purple Heart in the military? And the requirements for getting the Medal of Honor? And please be specific.

I wanted to see how much sacrifice there is between getting Purple Heart and Medal of Honor. What does it take in order to be awarded a Purple Heart? And how about the Medal of Honor?
@ The Waco Kid: you could not be more wrong, or incomplete, in your answers about the Purple Heart, MoH, Navy Cross and Silver Star.

Specifically:

- The purple heart is not just awarded for wounds received in combat, but also if you are KIA.

- The MoH, despite being presented in the "name of Congress" does not actually require any action from Congress. The approving authority is ultimately the President, based on recommendations from the Service Secretaries.

- The Navy Cross (and other Service Crosses) and Silver Star are in no way dependant on any action from the Congress either. The Crosses are approved by the individual Service Secretaries and / or the military Chiefs. The Silver Star can be Approved by the Theater Commander.

- Bronze Star approval authority has been delegated to the first Colonel in the Chain of Command.

- While there is certainly some politics involved in the Medal of Honor, I know of no issue that "our politicians don't like for our heroes to be mustang". That is an asinine statement that bears no validity to today's military.

I think your comments sound as if they are clouded by experience from many yeas ago.
The purple heart is awarded for wounds received in combat.

The Medal of Honor just like the Navy Cross and Silver Star are a judgment call from your peers and commanding officers as to whether or not your actions deserve such a medal but for all three they have to be recommended and approved by congress.

Bronze Stars and below can be awarded by your Regimental commander without consent of congress.

But the Medal of Honor unfortunately is also political. Our politicians don't like for our heroes to be mustang.

If you want a good idea as to what most people have been awarded for. Then type in "Hall of Valor" in your search engine and you can read thousands of citations. What does it take in order to be awarded a Purple Heart? And how about the Medal of Honor?
The Purple Heart is an award given to those in the US Military (any branch) who is wounded or killed in combat (which means you can't fall and break your leg to get the medal) as well as show great courage and valor. Meaning that if you were in combat, you could get this award for perhaps running across the street and being shot. However, the military has been having problems with giving out the medal recently because so many soldiers suffer from shell shock due to explosions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Usually, the medal will be awarded to whomever sustains a wound (a real wound like gunshot, lost limb, or death... usually not something simple like a broken bone or a cut) or is killed in battle due to the enemy.

The Medal of Honor is the absolute highest honor that the USA can give to a person of the US Military. This is awarded when soldiers present true valor, pride, bravery, and courage while risking their own life to save another. This means that if a fellow soldier was shot and laying in the street, you would have to leave cover and risk being killed by the enemy to retrieve that fallen soldier and bring them back to safety. Until very recently, there had been no living recipients of this award since the Vietnam Conflict.

The difference between the two awards is that the Purple Heart is given to a person who sacrifices their self in battle by being shot or killed. However, this is out of their control, whether they are wounded/killed or not. The Medal of Honor not only awards soldiers for saving the life of a teammate, but for intentionally risking their life to save them.
Purple Heart is awarded to US military personnel wounded or killed.

Medal of Honour is for military personnel who "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States." Many have been awarded posthumously. What does it take in order to be awarded a Purple Heart? And how about the Medal of Honor?
Purple Heart = you came back from war with a permanent injury, like a fake leg or shrapnel still stuck in your body.

Medal of Honor = really don't know.
